Tim Hayden, of 44 Doors, came all the way from Austin, Texas to play us a Beck song! Ok, so maybe he talked to us about social media for a bit, too.
For those of you unfamiliar with the Beck Song "Where It's At," here is the first verse that he had us sing a long to:
"There's a destination a little up the road
From the habitations and the towns we know
A place we saw the lights turn low
Jig-saw jazz and the get-fresh flow..."
Any person who can find a way to compare a Beck song to tourism social media has my attention.
Here are the KEY TAKEAWAYS from this session:
- Mobile computing is changing everything - You are pioneers of your field and everything you knew and know is going to continue to evolve and change
- Brevity rules the moment, in terms of connection + copy + call to action
- Be pragmatic with new devices and platforms - Remember: the shiny object may not be applicable
- Offer multiple channels from offline to online - You need use QR Codes, URLS and SMS
- Relevancy improves immediate conversations AND creates WOM (word-of-mouth) - If people are WOWed by what they see on their device, they will show other people
I also learned a few fun facts such as 50% of Web traffic comes from mobile devices, specifically untethered wireless computing devices. Also, 43% of smartphone users own an Android (take that, iPhone). Tim also hit the nail on the head when he said that if a site doesn't open within 30 seconds, people lose interest. I lose interest at 15 seconds...maybe I need to work on my patience?
Tim definitely rocked his session...with two turn tables and a microphone (ok, so I really really like Beck).
I'm also embarassed and excited to admit to/share with you guys that I scanned my first QR Code after this session. Yikes, slowly but surely I'm catching up with the social media world. Who knows what crazy thing I'll be convinced to try out after the next session.
Follow Tim on Twitter or tweet at him and tell him what you thought the session: @TheTimHayden
